چکیده

BackgroundThere are various experimental measurement techniques used to measure residual stress and this work describes one such method, the slotting its application near surface stresses.ObjectiveThis examines macro-scale specimens.MethodsA series of numerical experiments were performed understand size required assume that specimen is infinitely large, namely thickness, width, height. To assess repeatability, 12 measurements in a shot peened aluminum plate.ResultsThe determined should have thickness greater than or equal 21.6 mm (0.85 in), total width (normal slot length) 44.5 (1.75 height (parallel slot) 38.1 (1.5 in) for be assumed infinite. Slotting repeatability was found maximum standard deviation 30 MPa at decays rapidly 5 depth 0.3 from surface. Comparison x-ray diffraction performed. ConclusionsInfinite plate dimensions length as well repeatability. shown significantly better X-ray with layer removal application.

Numerical Study of the Effect of Materials’ Plastic Behavior on Equibiaxial Residual Stress Measurement Using Indentation

Indentation is a new method for estimating residual stress. The plastic behavior of the materials under study can affect indentation parameters and, thus, influences the results of residual stress measurement. In this paper, the effect of yield stress and work-hardening exponent on the accuracy of residual stress measurements in steels and aluminums was studied. Results showed that, for m...

A measurement of Young’s modulus and residual stress in MEMS bridges using a surface profiler

This paper addresses a relatively simple method of measuring Young’s modulus and residual stress in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) type structures. A surface profilometer is used to measure the deflection of thin film fixed-fixed beams due to the force applied by the profilometer probe. These measurements are analyzed using analytical beam theory. The treatment of end effects and the acc...

Iterative inversion method for eddy current profiling of near-surface residual stress in surface-treated metals

Because of their frequency-dependent penetration depth, eddy current measurements are capable of mapping the near-surface depth profile of the electric conductivity. This technique can be used to nondestructively characterize the subsurface residual stress distribution in certain types of shot-peened metals, e.g., in nickel-base superalloys. In this paper, a highly convergent iterative inversio...

Measurement of residual stress using laser-generated ultrasound

Most manufacturing processes result in residual stress. The level of residual stress can be high and could affect the structural integrity of the component. Without knowledge of the residual stress field, assessments are often overly conservative. There are many techniques available for residual stress measurement. Mechanical methods, such as centre-hole drilling, have been extensively used but...
